foreclosureWhen you are going through the process of foreclosure, there can often be a lot on your mind. If you have young children, they can pick up on your stress and may have a lot of questions about what is going on. When you are trying to organize your life, pack up for a move, and find a new place to stay, it can difficult for a young child to understand what is going on. Many children often think when things seem to be “going wrong” in their family, that it is their fault.

It is up to you to explain to your child what is going on and help them understand and get through both foreclosure, and moving into a new home.

The important thing to remember is that there can be a balance between honesty and too much information. Depending on the age of your child, your child doesn’t need to know every detail about the foreclosure process. At the same time, you don’t want to shelter them from information. Children can often get strange ideas into their heads and if they have a poor understanding of what is going on, they can often be very frightened or upset.

One good thing is to make sure your child understands that homes are things that people buy and sell. That can often be a difficult concept for a child to grasp, especially if they have spent their entire life in a home. When you drive to and from places, point out For Sale signs and explain that people are selling those homes.

You should also make sure to spend a lot of quality time with your child at the park or other places. You want to make sure that their bond with you is not dependent on the location that you are in.

When explaining why you have to move, you don’t have to go into a huge amount of detail. Many young children do understand the concept of choice, however. If you explain that you need to move to a new place that is less expensive, because you had to choose between paying for the house or for other things, it can often be easily understood by young children.

Lastly, you can try to make the moving process fun by having your child feel like they are a part of it. You can have them help you pack and label boxes, or other activities, so that they feel like they are contributing as well.
