If you want the day that you move into your new home to go as smoothly ashome-buyers possible, it’s important to remain calm and stay organized.

Keep a box with the essentials and clearly label it. You’ll want to have a box with all of the important essentials kept separate from the rest of the things that you are moving. This will include items you need for the trip and the things you will need as soon as you arrive at your new home.

This box can include things like your wallet with your ID, driver’s license and credit/debit cards. You’ll also want to bring things like bottled water, a toothbrush, toothpaste and soap. If you require prescription medication, you’ll want to keep it separate from the rest of your things. It’s also a good idea to pack a few non-perishable snacks like granola bars, to give you a quick boost of energy during the moving process.

Loading the truck. If you have hired movers, don’t just let them handle everything. Things will go much more smoothly if you supervise the process. Be sure to check the inventory list and sign it, and keep a copy in your moving folder. Be sure to give the movers all of the information that they will need and get their contact information in return.

Do a final walk-through of your old house. Don’t forget to go through the house after the movers have left to make sure that there is nothing getting left behind.  Be sure to check inside every cupboard and cabinet for anything that may have been forgotten. You should check for any damages that may have occurred during the moving process. It’s also a good idea to write down the final meter readings so that when you receive your final utilities bill, you can double-check the accuracy.

Unloading the truck. It’s a good idea to try to arrive at your new home before the movers so that you aren’t charged for the waiting period. It’s helpful if you tape names to doors and provide a map of the layout to assist the movers.
