moving-services-winnipegNot everyone is lucky enough to have a large truck and a bevy of strong and helpful friends when they move. If you’re planning on moving into a new home, you may end up hiring a moving company in order to move your things. It’s  not easy to choose the best moving company for your needs, and it can be a complicated decision so it is important to choose wisely.

Beware of companies you’ve never heard of. There are companies out there who will take advantage of customers who are not aware.

Ask your family and friends for recommendations. Nothing is better than word-of-mouth, and knowing that someone you trust had a positive experience with a mover can often be the best testimonial.

Don’t get quotes over the phone. An over-the-phone quote from a mover is not as accurate as a quote from a moving company representative who has actually been in your home and looked at the stuff that you are planning on moving.

Do use the phone conversation to screen movers. If you’re uncomfortable on the phone with a moving company, don’t hire them. It’s a good chance to weed out movers you don’t trust or don’t feel comfortable entrusting with your things.

Arrange for at least three in-home assessments. After you’ve talked on the phone to various moving companies, it’s a good idea to arrange at least three in-home assessments to get accurate estimates of the cost of moving your things. Make sure to tell the movers about any potential difficulties in transporting your stuff, including stairs at your new home. Be as detailed and thorough as possible, because the more detailed and thorough you are in showing them everything that needs to be moved, the more accurate the moving estimate will be.

If it seems too good to be true, be wary. If an estimate is too low, be wary. They may end up hitting you with hidden costs after-the-fact.

Once you have your estimate, make sure you understand it. Make sure the inventory of the items that are going to be moved is accurate. It’s also a good idea to check your mover with the Better Business Bureau and other organizations to ensure that they are licensed. Once you have all of those items in order, you can choose your mover and start packing! It’s time to move into your new home.
