This Independence Day celebration takes place at 9:00 pm on Wednesday, July 4th, and will last for 18 minutes. Fireworks are displayed from four barges in the San Diego Bay and one display from the end of the Imperial Beach Pier.

The fireworks show is choreographed to a special musical selection that can be heard by turning your radio dial to THE WALRUS 105.7 FM.

Visiting Information

Parking along the San Diego Bay fills up especially quickly and last year, Shelter Island was closed to incoming traffic by around 1:00 pm.

Shuttle service is available to Harbor Island from the Port of San Diego Administration Building, located at 3165 Pacific Highway. Shuttle service is available to Shelter Island from the corner of Carleton Street and Rosecrans Street in Point Loma, to the gazebo in Shelter Island.

Viewing locations are excellent at at any of the parks in the Port of San Diego, including Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Spanish Landing, Embarcadero Marina Parks North and South, Cesar Chavez Park and Coronado Tidelands Park.

If you are visiting from out of San Diego, many of the hotels in the Bay area are offering special rates for Independence Day. If you mention “Big Bay Boom” at some of the hotels, including the San Diego Hilton, you will be able to receive this special discounted rate.

Safety First

The Coast Guard, Harbor Police, City of San Diego Police and Imperial Beach Police are all working together to ensure that this is a safe and fun patriotic event for the whole family. If you are planning on viewing the fireworks show from a boat in the San Diego Bay, please observe the 300-food safety zone between your vessel and the barges from which the fireworks display are launched.
